Historic Fernandina Beach

Fernandina Beach Historic District

The Fernandina Beach Historic District is a 50-plus block area of downtown Fernandina Beach located on Amelia Island, Florida. This district is home to over 450 historic structures that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, where structures that can be found include buildings, commercial buildings, homes, churches and others. This is also where one can find turn of the century homes, many of Victorian style, that have been restored to what they where originally.

The Florida Railroad Company issued the first platted map of Fernandina back in 1857 and so many of the structures where built around this time in the 19th century. There have been 2 document fires since then that have destroyed parts of the district such as in 1876 and 1883 so parts of the historic district was rebuilt from time to time. As far as the location of the Fernandina Beach Historic District, its part of the downtown area that is on the west side of Fernandina Beach towards the inland and is fronted by the Fernandina Harbor Marina on its west end, with the Central Park located to its east. When exploring the Fernandina Beach Historic District and the downtown area in general, one will take a step back in time to experience what everything looked like back in the 19th century.

It’s also where you will be able to shop at unique stores, visit the art galleries, tour the museum, dine at lively eateries and restaurants with much more to explore in an area that is all within walking distance. You can also stroll down to the Victorian-era Seaport along the harbor. Plus also visit the beaches for fun in the sun and many water activities, or take a boat cruise in the waters and sail around the island or out into the ocean. It’s easy to see why the Fernandina Beach Historic District and Seaport made the list of 12 top vacation hotspots for historic preservation for the National Trust.
